The Hemet-San Jacinto Genealogical Society has undertaken a project to list all Obituaries in our local newspapers. We have started with the Hemet News, (1899) and will be adding additional papers in the future. These include obituaries of family members who resided in other states as well. Many obituaries are of people living in Los Angeles County, Riverside County, and San Diego County.
In the earlier papers, we found that many people died without an obituary. We have included the following for those earlier years, PROBATE, NOTICE TO CREDITORS and ESTATE SALES in place of obituaries. The newspaper had a column called “YESTERYEARS” Those who died prior to the newspaper, and those without an obituary have been included. When one is found, (anywhere from Five, to Forty Five years ago) it is noted with the year the event took place in italic, next to the name. Example:
SMITH, CLYDE A 1895 1940 HEMET NEWS
We continue to make every effort to locate the name of a wife who is listed by her husband’s name:
Mrs. Henry Jones, and if found will be listed as JONES, SARAH J
We will be adding a decade at a time beginning with 1899 - through 2003
